How screen size is measured
Screen size is the diagonal of the visible display area, from one corner to the opposite corner, in inches. It doesn't include the bezel. Resolution tells you how many pixels the display has; pixel density (PPI) tells you how tightly they are packed.
Why a website can't know your exact screen size
Browsers report resolution and pixel ratio but not physical size. This page matches your screen against a list of popular devices, and a quick calibration with a credit card gives the exact diagonal on any screen.
